Café Otoya is located in the middle of the historic Otoya neighborhood, being part of the Carmen district of the city of San Jose; together with the neighborhoods Amon, Aranjuez and Escalante, they form a landmark rich in historic architecture of the city. Barrio Otoya was born with the Peruvian Francisco Otoya Seminario, who came to Costa Rica during the 1870's and bought the land where the neighborhood is now located. At that time he called it Puerto Escondido or Potrero de los Otoya. Upon the death of Don Francisco in 1899 his children were planning the sale of the land; the land was segregated and sold to upper class families, where little by little the architecture of the early twentieth century was incorporated with European influence, a mixture of features of different architectural styles (eclectic style), luxurious details and ostentatious results.
Our building was constructed during the decade of the 50's, building 1907; as its name says it was possibly the date when its original owner obtained the property from the Otoya family.

Café Otoya Galeria de Arte is a space set up as an open gallery for exhibitions.
In the main façade, our building has beautiful murals generating its own language and a bohemian atmosphere for the enjoyment of our customers and visitors.
Enjoy a coffee or dinner surrounded by art, and if you want to purchase any of the pieces on display do not hesitate to consult with our staff who will give you the information.
